Setting Up a Small Home Studio

A working pottery corner needs less space than most people assume and more attention to dust, water and floor loading than they expect.

A corner of a garage, a shed or a spare room is enough room to throw pots in. The constraints that actually decide whether a small studio works are not about area. They are about where the water goes, where the dust goes, and whether the floor can carry a kiln.

Dust is the first problem, not the last

Dry clay dust contains fine silica particles, and breathing it over years is a genuine occupational hazard in the trade. Everything about how a small studio is organised should follow from that.

The rule that does most of the work is simple: nothing is ever swept or brushed dry, and nothing is left to dry as dust on a surface. Floors and benches are wiped with a wet sponge or mopped. A household vacuum cleaner makes the problem worse rather than better, because the fine fraction passes straight through an ordinary filter and is blown back into the air.

Clay scraps go into a bucket of water as they are produced rather than being left to dry on a bench. A damp cloth over the bucket keeps the surface from drying out. Work clothes stay in the studio and are washed separately.

The single most useful habit in a small pottery is that the studio is cleaned wet, every time, before anything has a chance to dry.

Good ventilation, and a properly fitted respirator for the occasions when dry materials are handled, cover the rest.

Water and drainage

Clay must never go down a household drain. It settles in the trap, it sets, and it eventually blocks the line solidly enough to require the pipe to be opened.

The standard solution is a settling arrangement: water from washing hands and tools goes into a bucket or a two-stage sink trap, the solids drop out over a day or two, and the clear water is poured off. The sediment is dried and either reclaimed into the clay bucket or disposed of as solid waste.

A studio without plumbing is entirely workable. A bucket of clean water, a bucket for waste and a basin is what a great many potteries run on.

The wheel and the space around it

A wheel needs its own footprint plus room to sit at it with elbows braced, and a surface within reach for tools and for the pot when it comes off. Roughly two square metres is comfortable.

More important is what is underfoot. Throwing is wet work and the floor around a wheel will be splashed continuously. A sealed concrete floor, or a sheet of heavy vinyl or a plastic tray under the wheel, prevents a slow disaster in a room with a wooden floor.

Seat height relative to the wheel head matters more for the back than anything else in the studio. The forearms should be able to rest on the thighs while the hands are on the clay, which means the wheel head sits fairly low relative to the seat.

Shelving and drying

The drying stage occupies more space and more time than anything else in the room. Pots need somewhere flat, out of draughts and out of direct sun, where they can dry slowly and evenly over days.

Plywood or plaster boards on open shelving work well, because the board can be carried with the pots on it rather than each piece being handled. Plastic sheeting is used constantly, both to slow drying on a piece that needs to stay even and to hold work at leather hardness until there is time to turn it.

A window that gets sun is the worst place in the room for a drying shelf. One side of a pot dries fast, the other stays damp, and the piece warps or cracks along the difference.

The kiln

A kiln is the part of the plan that needs a decision rather than an arrangement.

Weight is the first consideration. A modest electric kiln plus its furniture and a full load is a substantial concentrated load, and an upstairs room or a light timber floor is not a suitable location without proper advice.

Electrical supply is the second. Small kilns run from an ordinary domestic circuit; anything larger requires a dedicated supply installed by a qualified electrician, and that installation is not a job to improvise.

Ventilation is the third. Firing drives off water, organic material and various gases, and the space needs either a purpose-made kiln vent or good cross-ventilation to outside. A kiln also needs clearance from walls and from anything combustible, and the manufacturer's stated clearances are the figures to use.

Many people work for years without owning one, throwing and glazing at home and paying for space in a shared or community kiln. That arrangement removes the single largest cost and the single largest set of constraints, and it is worth considering before a kiln is bought.

What is actually needed to start

A wheel, a wedging surface, a bucket of clay, a basic set of tools, two buckets of water, a sponge, a board to dry on and somewhere to fire. Everything else is accumulated later, and most of it is accumulated in response to a specific problem rather than in advance of one.
